AGAC takes stock of the impact on Canadian galleries.
Since August 22, artworks produced in Canada have been subject to U.S. tariffs. In practical terms, an artwork produced in Canada and sold or shipped to the United States may be subject to a 50% tariff upon entry into the country.*
Since September 8, Canada has also imposed tariff countermeasures. Artworks produced in the United States are generally not subject to these measures, with a few exceptions. This includes printed works, including photographs, which are subject to a 50% tariff upon entering the country.**
The impact is significant, as galleries are small businesses and the Canadian market remains relatively small. Our members participated in a total of 32 fairs in the United States in 2025, and all have American collectors among their clients. These new tariffs therefore add significant financial pressure. To varying degrees, our members rely on the U.S. market to grow their businesses and develop audiences.
Moreover, tariffs have an impact on the circulation of artworks, international sales, participation in art fairs and, above all, the opportunities available to Canadian artists. The entire ecosystem is being affected.
In this context, the vitality of the Canadian art market depends more than ever on the ability of its various stakeholders to continue supporting one another and working together. Every acquisition, every gallery visit and every opportunity to discover the work of a Canadian artist helps keep this ecosystem vibrant.
