As part of the development of the The Galleries platform, AGAC collaborated with CAPACOA, the Canadian Association for the Performing Arts, which focuses on digital transformation and the discoverability of cultural content in connection with the Artsdata knowledge graph. Together, the two organizations carried out data mapping to structure and standardize information describing contemporary art venues, events, and exhibitions. This initiative is a key driver for improving the discoverability of the visual arts and facilitating the flow of cultural data.

Main Classes
In a data schema, a class is a grouping of real-world entities that share similar characteristics. In other words, a class is a “category” of similar things. For The Galleries, we have six main classes and one subclass:
- Event
- Exhibition (subclass of Event)
- Exhibition Concept
- Venue
- Organization
- Person
- Collection
The “Artwork” class was not included in the initial version of the The Galleries website.
Utility Classes
A utility class is a supplementary class used to specify, organize, or enrich the information associated with the main classes. For The Galleries, we have:
- Image object
- Mailing address
- Geographic coordinates
- Hours of operation
- Participation method
- Event status
Properties
A property is an element used to describe a characteristic of an entity or to establish a relationship between two entities. For example, an entity of the “Exhibition” class can be associated with an entity of the “Exhibition Concept” class using the “influencedBy” property.
Check out the spreadsheet of properties for the main classes, developed by AGAC in collaboration with CAPACOA.
Controlled Vocabularies
A controlled vocabulary is a set of defined and standardized terms used to describe information in a consistent manner. Controlled vocabularies have been documented in the SKOS (Simple Knowledge Organization System) to facilitate their representation on the Semantic Web and their mapping to other vocabularies and thesauri.
